It is the most populous state in India situated in the northern part of India. This state is the largest producer of food grains, sugarcane and potatoes in India.
Districts of Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is divided into 75 Districts and 18 Divisions. The divisions are Agra, Aligarh, Allahabad, Azamgarh, Bareilly, Basti, Chitrakoot, Devipatan, Faizabad, Gorakhpur, Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Meerut, Mirzapur, Moradabad, Saharanpur and Varanasi. The districts of Uttar Pradesh under these divisions are:
Sambhal District: Under Moradabad division, Bahjoi town is the headquarters of this district which is divided in 3 tehsils.
Amroha District: Also under Moradabad division, Amroha town is the headquarters. According to 2001 census this is one of the Minority Concentrated Districts.
Raebareli District: Under Lucknow division its headquartered in the city of Raebareli.
Kannauj District: It is an administrative district, under Kanpur division carved out of Farrukhabad district on September 18, 1997.
Lalitpur District: A part of Jhansi Division with Lalitpur as its headquarters, the district occupies an area of 5,039 square km.
Kushinagar District: This district under Gorakhpur division has its headquarters at Ravindra Nagar Dhoos in Padrauna. It is named after town Kushinagar, a Buddhist pilgrimage site where Gautama Buddha attained parinirvana in 5th century BCE.
Firozabad District: The district headquartered at Firozabad town, comes under the Agra division. It was named after Firoz Shah Mansab Dar in 1566.
Hardoi District: Under Lucknow division, Hardoi town is the headquarters of this district. It district has five tehsils. It is famous for its guava, different varieties of mangoes and lemons.
Ghazipur District: Under the Varanasi division, the city of Ghazipur is the district headquarters. The place is popular for "Gulab Jal" (scented rose water) and the tomb of Lord Cornwallis (Viceroy of British India).
Agra District: This district is famous for leather goods, handicrafts and Zari work. Agra houses the world renowned monument Taj Mahal.
Mainpuri District: Mainpuri town is the district headquarters under Agra division. It consists of 6 tehsils.
Mathura District: Famous as a pilgrim destination, Vrindavan, is a holy town here.
Aligarh District: This district under Aligarh division is famous for its lock and hardware industries and is also known as the Tala Nagri.
Etah District: Etah town is the district headquarters, under Aligarh Division.
Hathras District:This district under Aligarh division survives on agricultural production that includes paddy, jowar and bajra.
Kasganj District: Under Aligarh, with headquaerters at Kasganj, this district consists of Kasganj, Patiali and Sahawar tehsils.
Allahabad District: This district is a pilgrimage spot of the Hindus. It is situated at the confluence of three rivers, Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.
Fatehpur District: This district of Allahabad division lies between two rivers Ganges and Yamuna.
Kaushambi District: Under Allahabad division, this district is an important historical place and pilgrim centre with some beautiful temples.
Pratapgarh District: The headquarters of the Pratapgarh district under Allahabad division is situated at Bela, presently known as Bela Pratapgarh.
Azamgarh district: This district has its headquarters at Azamgarh under Azamgarh division.
Ballia District: Ballia district of Azamgarh division has a strong agricultural and industrial base.
Mau District: A part of Azamgarh Division with headquarters in Maunath Bhanjan.
Budaun District: Budaun town is the district headquarter under Bareilly division. As per British historian George Smith, Budaun was named after Koli prince Budh.
Bareilly District: It is the nucleus of economic, cultural and educational activities in the state and famous for Zari work.
Pilibhit District: Pilibhit city is the district headquarters under Bareilly Division.
Shahjahanpur District: Under Bareilly division, this district was established in 1813 by British Government separating from district Bareilly. Shahjahanpur city is its headquarters.
Basti district: This district is a rich producer of sugarcane, maize, paddy, pulses, wheat, barley and potato.
Sant Kabir Nagar District: The headquarters of this is located at Khalilabad town under Basti division.
Siddharth Nagar District: This district comes under Basti division and Naugarh town is the district headquarters. According to the 2001 census it is one of the Muslim concentrated districts in India.
Banda district. This district of Chitrakoot division is dotted with numerous historical monuments and temples like Kalinjar fort, Rangarh fort, Maheshwari Devi temple etc.
Chitrakoot District. The district of Chitrakoot division is significant according to the epic Ramayana.
Hamirpur District: Hamirpur town is the district headquarters under Chitrakoot Division.
Mahoba district: Situated at the foot of a granite hill called Gorakhgiri, the district is famous for granite stone.
Bahraich district: This place has rich historical background. Major tourist attractions in the district are Dargah Sharief and Kartaniya Ghat Alligator Breeding Centre.
Balrampur District: Balrampur town is the district headquarters. It is known for the Pateshwari Devi temple and the ruins of the ancient city of Sravasti, a pilgrimage for Buddhists and Jains.
Gonda District: Gonda is the district headquarters and also administrative centre for Devipatan Division.
Shravasti District: Bhinga town is district headquarters under Devipatan Division. As per 2001 census data, the district is one of the minority concentrated districts in India.
Ambedkar Nagar district: Headquartered at Akbarpur, it derives the name from Dr B R Ambedkar.
Amethi District: This district of Faziabad division has Gauriganj as its headquarters.
Barabanki District: It is located in the Faziabad division and Barabanki city is the district headquarter.
Faizabad district. It is situated on the banks of the river Sarayu.
Sultanpur District: Jagdishpur town of this district is famous for large and medium scale industries like oil mills, carpet manufacturing etc.
Deoria District: Under Gorakhpur division, it produces sugarcane which is a principal source of revenue for the state.
Gorakhpur District: It gained importance for major religious destination.
Maharajgunj District: Maharajgunj city is the district headquarters. The district was carved out from the erstwhile Gorakhpur district on 2nd October 1989.
Jalaun District: Under Jhansi division it is the trade centre for agricultural produce.
Jhansi District: Jhansi city is the district headquarters and the place has historical relevance.
Auraiya District: Kakor Buzurg village is the district headquarters under Kanpur division.
Etawah District: Under Kanpur division it has a rich variety of wildlife as 30,966 hectares of land is covered with forest.
Farrukhabad district: Under Kanpur division, the place is famous for its tobacco industry.
Kanpur Nagar and Kanpur Dehat District: They are included in Kanpur Metropolitan Region.
Lakhimpur Kheri District: Also known as Kheri district, it occupies an area of 7,680 sq km.
Lucknow district:Lucknow, situated here is the capital of Uttar Pradesh and is famous for its Chikan work, Zardozi and Kamdani.
Sitapur District: It is a rich producer of wheat, rice, sugarcane, mustard and groundnuts.
Unnao District: It is known for tourist spots like Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary, Mogli Water Park and Badarqa Harbans.
Baghpat District: Under the Meerut division it has Baghpat as its district headquarters.
Bulandshahr district: Situated between Ganga and Yamuna rivers, it is a major agricultural district.
Gautam Budh Nagar district: Important towns of this district under Meerut division are Dadri, Noida, Greater Noida and Sikandrabad.
Ghaziabad District: This district aids in the growth of State economy with industrial and agricultural contributions.
Hapur District: This district under Meerut division lies on the Ganges.
Meerut District: Well known as tourist and pilgrim destination, it includes Hastinapur, Suraj Kund, Bale Miyan ki Darghah, Parikishatgarh, Pura, Kithore, Lawar, Baleni and Barnawa.
Mirzapur District: Mirzapur town is its administrative headquarters.
Sant Ravidas Nagar District: Also called Bhadohi district in Mirzapur division, it is famous for carpets.
Sonbhadra District: It lies in the Mirzapur division.
Bijnor District: Under Moradabad division this district promotes tourism in Vidur Kuti, Kanva Ashram, Daranagar, Ganj, Sena Ka Dawar and Mandawar Ka Mahal.
Moradabad district: It is famous for handicrafts, artistic brass products and horn & bone handicrafts.
Rampur District: Rampur town is the district headquarters under Moradabad division.
Muzaffarnagar District: This district is known for a number of papers, sugar and steel rolling mills.
Saharanpur District: This district surrounded by the Shivalik ranges is a rich producer of wheat, maize, sugarcane, cotton and jute.
Shamli District: Separated from Muzaffarnagar District on 28 September 2011, this district has its headquarters in Shamli under Saharanpur division.
Chandauli district: This is famous for Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary.
Jaunpur district: This district lies under Varanasi division.
Varanasi District: It is one of the holiest pilgrimages for Hindus.
