Situated at an elevation of 5, 091 m, the Shingo La Pass is one of the easiest and most popular high altitude pass that connects Lahaul and Zanskar in the Indian states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir respectively. There is a shallow lake or pool 20m below the pass. With no glacial trekking or steep climbs, the Shingo La Pass is one of the easiest 5000 m passes in the Himalayan Mountain Ranges and is used by both locals and travellers alike.
Overview of Shingo La Pass
The Shingo La Pass has snow all year round and during the summer season there are only traces of snow along the pass. This pass is known to be the starting point to the Lugnak Valley in Zanskar. There are no proper roads for going south of Zanskar and currently the Indian Government is contemplating to build a road over the Shingo La Pass. Recently, in October 2018, Shingo La became a motorable pass and now acts as a third link to Kargil from Manali.
Shingo La Pass Trek
The trek to the Shingo La Pass begins at Darcha in the Lahaul valley, the base camp of which is set up at Chumik Nakpo. The trail from here is a gentle ascent to the camp at Palamo. The trail continues further on a fairly level surface as the glacial streams and rivers are crossed for the next stop at Zanskar Sumdo. There is an unmetalled road till Zanskar Sumdo which is 9 to 10 hrs from the Shingo La Pass towards Darcha side. On the other side, there is a steep descent to Lakham from Padum side. The absence of a glacier, overly steep ascent and clear path make this a fairly non-technical trek.
