| Places of Interest in Pushkar, Rajasthan
| |
| There are several places of interest in Pushkar that are worth checking out. From times immemorial the city of Pushkar has been an important pilgrimage center. However it was in the 7th century that the city was restored to its earlier beauty. Although it is worldwide famous for the Brahma Temple it is important for the tourists to know that there are several other holy shrines as well in Pushkar. Guided tours are offered to the travelers for sightseeing. In case the travelers are interested they can also plan their visits according to the festive seasons in Pushkar. With fair and festivities all around for once the serene city becomes bustling.
The sightseeing in Pushkar is mainly divided into two parts-the temples and the Pushkar Lake. The Temples in Pushkar comprise of:-
Brahma Temple: It is, probably, the most important pilgrim centre for the Hindus. The main significance of the shrine is that it is the only Brahma Temple in India. The temple houses a four-faced black image of Brahma whose eyes are encrusted with silver. The temple is guarded by an intricately carved marble gateway before the silver sanctuary doors. The marble floor is inset with hundreds of silver rupees coins surrounding a silver turtle - the God carrier. The surrounding area of the temple epitomizes pictorial beauty.
Savitri Temple: It is dedicated to Brahma`s first wife, Savitri. It is located on the hill that lies behind the Brahma temple. A fight of stairs will lead the travelers to this temple. From atop the temple one can get a panoramic view of the adjacent area that is dotted with sand dunes. It serves the double purpose of being a religious place as well as scenic beauty.
Rangji Temple: What makes this temple stand out is its resemblance to South Indian temples. Similar to the South Indian shrines this temple too has a high rising Gopuram. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple has two massive sculptures of dwarpalas or gatekeepers at the main entrance. The idol of Garuda is also to be found here. It is the vahan of Lord Vishnu. This place has developed as the venue for a number of cultural programmes.
Mahadev Temple: Another god who is worshipped in a huge scale in Rajasthan is Lord Mahadev or Shiva. At a religious place like Pushkar it is impossible not to have a shrine dedicated to the lord. This Hindu temple is well known for the principal deity that is a 5-faced idol. The temple has been built in pristine white marble and it is intricately carved.
Warah Temple: It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. But it is interesting to note that here the lord is worshipped in the incarnation of wild boar. Warah means wild boar. The temple too derives its name from the lord. It is said that is was built by King Anaji Chauhan in the 12th century.
Apteshwar Temple: This too is an important temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva and dates back to the 12th century. It reflects the architectural grandeur of the age.
Apart from the temples the tourists must also witness the Pushkar Lake that is centuries old.
Pushkar lake: This is a semicircular lake that has a whooping 52 ghats. The lake is 10 meters deep. This is a holy lake and it is believed that a dip into it on Kartika Purnima will bring salvation. Numerous legends are associated with the lake in Pushkar.
