The Bhavnagar University was established in 1978 in Bhavnagar in the state of Gujarat. It is one of the oldest centers of learning in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat.

The University is known for providing courses and conducting research programmes in Science, Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Medicine, Management, Rural Studies and Law Faculties. It has twenty postgraduate departments, four constituent colleges. Colleges affiliated to the University are in diverse disciplines like Medical Dental, Homeopathy and Engineering etc. The university is one of the valued members of the commonwealth countries and is under the development programmes of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The University has twelve postgraduate courses, which are looked after by some of the colleges affiliated to it. Known for its research activities, it conducts research in diverse fields like, Nano-Technology, Marine Ecology, Intellectual Property Rights & its Management and Entrepreneurship.
