Vembakottai Reservoir

Vembakottai Reservoir, situated on the Vaippar River in Tamil Nadu, serves as an important source of irrigation for the surrounding region. The reservoir is in the vicinity of Sivakasi, an industrial city in Virudhunagar located approximately 15 km to the north. It supplies drinking water to Sivakasi city.

Vembakottai Reservoir derives its name from Vembakottai, a locality in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu. The area holds considerable archaeological significance, as excavations have been conducted there on three occasions, uncovering thousands of artefacts. These findings indicate that people lived along the banks of the Vaippar River approximately 2,000 years ago, highlighting the region’s long history and cultural importance.

Vembakottai Reservoir has a storage capacity of approximately 398.70 million cubic feet, equivalent to about 0.4 TMC. The reservoir features two sluices and serves as a popular local destination for photography, bird watching, and family outings. 

Vembakottai Reservoir itself reflects notable engineering expertise while fulfilling a vital role in supporting agricultural activities and water supply in the region. The reservoir system retains its water from seven distributaries of Vaippar River. These streams start their journey from the eastern slopes of the Western Ghats.

A total of 34 bird species belonging to 19 families were identified at Vembakottai Reservoir. The Ardeidae family recorded the highest diversity, with seven species, making it the dominant bird family in the reservoir. This was followed by the Ciconiidae, Threskiornithidae, and Anatidae families, with three species each. The Pelecanidae, Scolopacidae, and Alcedinidae families were represented by two species each.

The remaining families, including Sternidae, Burhinidae, Meropidae, Cerylidae, Charadriidae, Recurvirostridae, Turnicidae, Accipitridae, Phalacrocoracidae, Coraciidae, Apodidae, and Anhingidae, were each represented by a single species. Overall, Ardeidae was the most dominant family recorded at Vembakottai Reservoir, while the other families were comparatively less dominant.

The lush greenery and local wildlife around the reservoir add to its tranquil atmosphere. The area is also frequently visited by locals and tourists who enjoy its natural beauty and peaceful environment. Vembakottai Reservoir also has beautiful gardens and boating facilities. 

The Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs. 2.74 crore for the development and improvement of Vembakottai Reservoir and nearby water bodies as designated public tourism destinations. The proposed development includes the provision of park facilities to enhance the area’s recreational and tourism potential.
