Rezang La

Rezang La is a mountain pass on the Chushul Valley in Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir with an average height of 16,000 feet.

Rezang La, Himalayan Mountain RangeRezang La is a mountain pass located on the Chushul Valley of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir. The word "La" means pass in Tibetan language. Rezang La pass is 3,000 yards long and 2,000 yards wide with an average height of 16,000 feet. Rezang La was the site of the last stand of the 13 Kumaon during the Sino-Indian war of 1962. Without this victory, this region would have been captured by China. This battle is one of the 8 stories of collective bravery published by UNESCO.

Rezang La Battle
During Sino-Indian war of 1962, Indian army was lead by Major Shaitan Singh on Rezang La pass. He won the posthumous Param Vir Chakra for his actions during the war. On 18th November 1962, 114 Indian soldiers out of 123 were killed for the action. A memorial in Rewari mentions that 1300 Chinese soldiers were killed in the battle. Most of the Ahir soldiers came from Rewari of Haryana and Alwar of Rajasthan.

Memorials for Rezang La Battle Martyrs
A memorial was built near Dharuhera Chowk in the Rezang La Park of Rewari City by the Rezangla Shaurya Samiti. Memorial functions are arranged every year by the samiti in collaboration with district administration and the Kumaon Regiment in memory of the brave soldiers. Family members of the martyrs also take part in those functions.
