The state of West Bengal is located in the eastern part of India. It has sea beaches, hill stations, wildlife sanctuaries and pilgrimages, which have beautified this state. These, along with Victoria Memorial, Sunderbans, St. Paul`s Cathedral, etc draw a plethora of tourists to this state. West Bengal also has national parks, which provide protection to the flora and fauna in the state.
Gorumara National Park
Gorumara National Park is located in the Jalpaiguri district. It became a national park in the year 1994. This national park falls under Indomalaya ecozone. Some of the occupants of the national park are sal forests with common teak, bamboo groves, terai grassland vegetation, tropical riverine reeds, mammals, birds, reptiles, turtles and fish.
Jaldapara National Park
Jaldapara National Park is situated at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas in northern West Bengal. It occupies an area of about 216.51 square kilometers. It was declared a sanctuary in 1941 with the aim to protect flora and fauna. Some of the occupants of the park are animals like Indian one-horned rhinoceros, Indian leopard and sambar and birds like Bengal florican, crested eagle and Finn`s weaver.
Neora Valley National Park
Neora Valley National Park is situated in the Kalimpong district. It was established in 1986 and occupies an area of about 88 square kilometers. Some of the occupants of the park are rhododendron, bamboo, oak, sal, Indian leopard, sloth bear, red panda, satyr tragopan and Darjeeling woodpecker.
Singalila National Park
Singalila National Park is situated in Darjeeling district. It became a national park in 1992. The park comes under Indomalaya ecozone. Some of the inmates of the park are thick bamboo, oak, magnolia, rhododendron forest, mammals like red panda, leopard cat and barking deer, birds like scarlet minivet and kalij pheasant, reptiles and amphibians.
Sundarbans National Park
Sundarbans National Park is housed in South 24 Parganas. It was established in 1984 and occupies an area of about 1,330.12 square kilometers. It is a National Park, Tiger Reserve and Biosphere Reserve. The park comprises of 54 small islands. Some of the inmates of the park are sundari trees, Bengal tiger, fishing cats, birds like black-capped kingfishers and brahminy kite, aquatic fauna like sawfish and butter fish and reptiles.
Buxa National park
Buxa National Park is located in Jalpaiguri district. It was established as a National Park in the year 1992 and has a total area of about 117.10 square kilometers. The park comprises of rare orchids, medicinal plants, tiger, elephant, civet, leopard, fishing cat, palm civet, wild dogs, barking deer etc.
