Libraries in Hyderabad are famous for their large and rare collection of books, magazines, journals and several other documents. Among all the libraries, the most popular ones are State Central Library, Sundarayya Vignana Kendram, British Library and others.

Libraries in HyderabadAccording to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014, Hyderabad in the existing state of Andhra Pradesh, was declared as the common capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, for a period not exceeding ten years. This city is spread over an area of about 650 square kilometers. This city has a population of about 6.7 million and a metropolitan population of about 7.75 million. Hyderabad has several libraries which serve as significant sources of information and wisdom for the students.

State Central Library
The State Central Library (SCL) was earlier known as Asafia Library. This library was established in the year in 1891 by Nawab Imad-ul-Mulk. INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) Hyderabad granted heritage status to this library in the year 1998. This library is a storehouse of about 500,000 books and magazines including some rare palm leaf manuscripts.

Sri Krishna Devaraya Andhra Bhasha Nilayam

This library was named after Sri Krishna Devaraya and during the initial days of its foundation it was operated from the home of its founding secretary named, Jagirdar Ravichettu Ranga Rao. It is said that this library was a major nerve-centre of nationalist rebellion against the regime of the Nizam and promoted Telugu language. Readers will notice over 40, 000 books, apart from old magazines and newspapers here.

British Library
British Library of Hyderabad was erected in the year 1979 and it is said to be one of the most famous local libraries of this part of the country. The library is home to a gigantic collection of books on a wide range of subjects like History, Geography and Science and numerable encyclopedias. Digital book reading facility is also available in this library which adds an element of interest to it, particularly amongst the young readers who visit this library.

Sundarayya Vignana Kendram
Established by a voluntary trust organization to commemorate late Puchalapalli Sundaraiah during the year 1988, Sundarayya Vignana Kendram is yet another significant library of Hyderabad. It aims to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the civilization of the country and possesses over 2, 500, 000 documents belonging to the 19th and 20th centuries. They are available in the form of English, Telugu and Urdu literature. This library buys the latest reports and books regularly and remains updated.
