Lakes in West Bengal

Lakes of West Bengal have added value to the tourism in this state.

Lakes in West BengalThe state of West Bengal is located in the eastern part of India. It has sea beaches, islands, hill stations, wildlife sanctuaries, national parks and pilgrimages, which have beautified this state. These, along with Victoria Memorial, Sunderbans, St. Paul`s Cathedral, etc draw a plethora of tourists to this state. Lakes of West Bengal are no exception in this regard. They have also added value to the tourism in this state.

Rabindra Sarobar
Rabindra Sarobar is situated in South Kolkata. It houses different types of fishes. This artificial lake serves as a tourism product of West Bengal, but intense tourist flow and growth of habitation around it has resulted in the lake becoming polluted. Consequently, this lake has been included under the National Lake Conservation Plan by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India.

Senchal Lake
Senchal Lake is situated about 10 km south-east of the town called Darjeeling. It has a surface elevation of about 8,160 ft and serves as the main reservoir of potable water for the town. This lake is a part of the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary.

Bhangzang Salamander Lake
Lakes in West BengalBhangzang Salamander Lake is a green-tinted lake located about 14 kilometers from Kurseong. The lake site is utilized as a picnic spot and provides shelter to endangered species of the amphibian - the Salamander.

Mirik Lake
Mirik Lake is located in Darjeeling District. Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council Enterprises provides opportunity for fishing in the lake. Boating is a fun filled possibility on the lake, along with horse riding along the lake"s periphery. This lake also serves as a picnic spot. There is a foot-over bridge which connects one side of the lake to the other side. It has a length of about 80-foot.

Rasikbil
Rasikbil is located in Cooch Behar district. The trees around this small lake serve as a home to a plethora of birds. Some of the birds in and around the lake are ibis, owl, kingfisher, parrots, etc. A deer park and a crocodile rehabilitation center have been established by the side of the lake. The lake is also associated with a leopard house, a python house, an aviary and a tortoise rescue centre.

Motijhil
Motijhil is located in Murshidabad. Nawazish Muhammad Khan, the son-in-law of Nawab Alivardi Khan is credited with the establishment of this lake. This lake is known to be built in the former beds of the Bhagirathi River that once flowed near this lake.
