Early Life of Ranveer Singh
Born on 6th July, 1985 in Mumbai to Jagjit Singh Bhavnani and Anju Bhavnani, Ranveer has an elder sister named Ritika. He is the maternal cousin of Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor and film producer Rhea Kapoor, daughters of famed actor Anil Kapoor. Having aspired to be an actor throughout his childhood, he performed in school plays and debates. Later, after joining junior college at H.R. College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai, he realized the difficulties and obstacles of pursuing a career in Bollywood and the idea being "too far-fetched", he started diverting himself towards his second passion, creative writing. He moved to the United States to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, where he simultaneously took acting classes. The classes revived his dream of being an actor and he took up theatre as his minor. He returned to Mumbai in 2007 and worked as a copywriter for a few years with advertising agencies. He later worked as an assistant director before solely pursuing a career in acting. He attended all kinds of auditions and sent his portfolio across to different directors but was only being offered minor roles, while being determined to start his career with a lead role in mainstream Hindi cinema.
Career of Ranveer Singh
In January 2010, Ranveer got a call from the head of the casting division of Yash Raj Films, for an audition for the lead role of Bittoo Sharma in their upcoming romantic comedy titled ‘Band Baaja Baaraat’, set in the world of wedding planning. Seeing the audition tapes and impressed with his acting, the producer was convinced Ranveer fits the part. Describing the character as a typical Delhi boy, Ranveer spent time in the Delhi University campus interacting with the students, to develop a better understanding and essence of his character. After the release, the movie became a commercial and critical success. Ranveer’s performance was received with unanimous critical and public applause, earning him all the awards in the debut category that year, including the Best Male Debut at the 56th Filmfare Awards.
Ranveer was seen next in ‘Ladies vs Ricky Bahl’, alongside Parineeti Chopra, Anushka Sharma, Dipannita Sharma and Aditi Sharma. The film received a positive response from critics, but its performance in the box office was declared average. He made a special appearance in the title song of the movie ‘Bombay Talkies’, alongside many other stars from tinsel town. He next featured in Vikramaditya Motwane’s period romantic drama ‘Lootera’, loosely inspired by O. Henry’s short story ‘The Last Leaf’, which failed to perform at the box office, but received wide critical appraisal as did Ranveer’s performance. He next starred alongside Deepika Padukone, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, titled ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’. The film was a critical and Ranveer’s biggest commercial success. The character gave Ranveer a starry presence and his performance earned him a Filmfare Best Actor nomination. His next performance was a vibrant portrayal of a Bengali criminal in Ali Abbas Zafar’s ‘Gunday’, alongside Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan, which was also a box office success. After a cameo appearance in ‘Finding Fanny’, Ranveer played a gangster in Shaad Ali’s unsuccessful crime drama ‘Kill Dil’, alongside Govinda, Parineeti Chopra and Ali Zafar. He also featured in Zoya Akhtar’s multi-starrer comedy drama ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’, alongside Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Akhtar and Anushka Sharma, as the younger sibling of a dysfunctional Punjabi family. His portrayal justified the character’s subtlety with finesse and impressive comic timing.
As of December 2015, Ranveer is promoting Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus ‘Bajirao Mastani’, where is sharing screen space with Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, portraying Baji Rao I, the Peshwa of Maratha Empire.
