Prominent Records in Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role
Since introduced only in 1992, veteran villain playing actors of the earlier time and their well known performances weren’t recognised with the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Negative Role. Some of these include Amjad Khan for his role of Gabbar Singh in the very popular ‘Sholay’ of 1975, although nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category and Amrish Puri for his role of Mogambo in ‘Mr. India’ of 1987. Actors like Pran, Prem Chopra, Jeevan, Ajit and Ranjeet were famous for their portrayal of negative characters in the 70s and 80s.
Actors Nana Patekar and Ashutosh Rana have most number of wins, both having won twice, with latter winning two times in a row in 1998 and 1999. Considered the greatest villain playing actor of all time, Amrish Puri holds the record for most number of nominations and also most number of nominations without ever winning, with 7. He also has been consecutively nominated for the maximum, with 3 from 1992 to 1994. Danny Dengzongpa is the only actor to have more than one nomination in the same year, with 2 in 1995.
Priyanka Chopra and Abhishek Bachchan are the only actors who have been nominated in another acting category along with the Best Villain category for the same role. While Priyanka Chopra was nominated for her performance in ‘Aitraaz’ in the Best Supporting Actress category along with Best Villain, Abhishek Bachchan was nominated under Best Supporting Actor for his performance in ‘Yuva’. This incidentally happened in the same year in 2005, when Abhishek won in the Best Supporting Actor and Priyanka received the award for Best Villain.
In 1998, Kajol became the first female actor to be nominated in this category and eventually win the award for her role in ‘Gupt’. She and Priyanka Chopra are the only female actors to have won this award. Other actresses who have been nominated are Urmila Matondkar for ‘Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya’ in 2002, Shabana Azmi for ‘Makdee’ in 2003, Bipasha Basu for ‘Jism’ in 2004, Preity Zinta for ‘Armaan’ in 2004 and Amrita Singh for ‘Kalyug’ in 2006.
