
The Trivandrum Zoo is located in the center of the city of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerela. Set among woodland, lakes and lawns this zoo is one of the well designed zoos in Asia. It is one of the oldest zoo in the country which was established as an next to the Napier Museum in the year 1857. It was built by the erstwhile Maharaja of Travancore.
The sole purpose of the zoo was recreational but gradually the purpose of the zoo changed from recreation to conservation. Sprawling over an area of fifty five acres of land the zoo offers rare opputunity for picturesque surroundings besides a rich collection of wildlife. The zoo has nearly seventy five species of animals from India as well as from abroad. It also has several animal species from Ethiopia and Australia. Among the native endangered species the zoo houses the Lion tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Nilgiri Tahr, Indian Rhino, Asiatic Lion, Royal Bengal Tiger, Leopard. Several species from the African region are also found here namely, giraffe, hippo, cape buffalo and zebra.
An aviary and a reptile house with various poisonous and non- poisonous snakes which is located within the zoo premises. There is also a botanical garden within the zoo premises which has various species of tropical plants and tres.
