Macaque, Indian AnimalMacaques are the most widely found species in the world after humans. Some of the macaque species lack tails and they are known as apes. The Lion Tailed Macaque is one of the subspecies of macaque, which is found in the Western Ghats of South India. Lion-tailed macaques spend most of the time on trees and are very good swimmers. The Stump Tailed Macaque is also called Bear macaque. It can grow to a length of seventy centimeters and the tail can grow to a length of eight centimeters. They weigh nearly six to thirteen kilograms and may live as long as thirty years.

The Rhesus Macaque in India is one of the oldest monkeys in the world. They live for nearly fifteen years and are very close to human beings. They are good swimmers. The Bonnet Macaque is found only in India and is called so because of its physical appearance. They have a cap-like whorl of hair on their head, which moves from the center to the outwards. This looks more like a hat and therefore they have been named Bonnet macaques. The Assam Macaque is called the Himalayan Macaque or the Hill Monkey in India. It has a hairless face and the skin colour varies from yellowish to dark brown. The colour of the face is red. The Arunachal Macaque lives in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and is scientifically called Macaca munzala.
