Located in the Sonbhadra district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the Vijaygarh Fort is one of the ruined forts of Uttar Pradesh. The fort is famous for its perennial ponds within the premises and the cave drawings, sculptures, inscriptions on walls of the fort.
History of Vijaygarh Fort
Built in the 5th century, the Vijaygarh Fort was built by the kings of coal of the Sonbhadra district. In 1040 AD, the fort was renovated by Maharaja Vijay Pal, who was the great Jadon Rajput king. Over the centuries, the Vijaygarh Fort passed several hands and the last ruler was Raja Chait Singh of Benaras before it came under the British rule. Currently, the Vijaygarh Fort is in a state of ruin.
Attraction of Vijaygarh Fort
In the main gateway of the Vijaygarh Fort, there is a tomb, which is said to be that of Saiyyed Jain-ul-Abdin Meer Sahib popularly known as Hazrat Meeran Shah Baba. There are also two tanks known as Mira Sagar and Ram Sagar near the tomb which are never dry. The fort also houses several old temples and red stone pillars bearing inscriptions of Vishnuverdhan feudatory of Samudra Gupta. More than half the area of Vijaygarh is covered by the steep and rugged hills of the Kaimur Range. Between the two tanks there was a palace known as Rang Mahal, which had artistic rock carvings and assumed as palace of Princess Chandrakanta.
