Tiruvamundur Temple is one of the five Pandava temples located in the Chengannur area in Indian state of Kerala. The temple is associated with Mahabharata. The temple has been glorified by the tamil hymns of Nammalwar of the 1st millennium CE. It is situated 6 km north of Chengannur on the Ernakulam Trivandrum railroad. The temple is dedicated to Kamalanathan. This temple dates back to the period of Kulasekhara Perumaal.
Legend of Tiruvamundur Temple
The Tiruvamundur Temple is associated with many legends. As per a legend Nakula, one of the Pandavas had built the temple here. It is believed that he was blessed with the duty of preaching the truth to humanity. Lord Vishnu is said to have created a text describing the protocol to be adopted for worshipping him, at this shrine.
Architecture of Tiruvamundur Temple
Tiruvamundur Temple is a beautiful shrine that has been well designed and decorated. The temple is adorned with a circular vimanam, a namaskaramandapam and a gopuradwaram. Much of the present structure dates back to the 14th century CE. The deity of the temple here Kamalanathan is seen in standing posture. The deity is also named as Pambaniyappan. The name has been derived from Pampa River that encircles the town. There is also a shrine to Gopalakrishnan here. In the 20th century the temple was repaired and renovated by the Travancore kings (Moolam Tirunaal). Many years ago the temple had an idol of Gopalakrishna that was lost. The idol was later re-discovered in the 1960`s and repaired and re-installed.
