Norman Marjoribanks
Norman Marjoribanks, Sir Norman Edward Marjoribanks KCIE, CSI, served as the acting Governor of Madras Presidency in the year 1929 under the administration of the British Empire.
Early Life of Norman Marjoribanks
Norman Edward Marjoribanks was born on 16 October 1872 in India into a Scottish family. He completed his primary education at Bishop Cotton`s School and College in Bangalore (now Bengaluru). Later he studied at Belfast Royal Academy, Royal University of Ireland and Trinity College, Cambridge. He passed the entrance examination for the British Indian Civil Service in the year 1891 and was allocated to the Madras Presidency.
Career of Norman Marjoribanks
Norman Marjoribanks was appointed as Assistant Collector and Magistrate in Madras Presidency. He served in the position from October 29, 1893 to July 1901. Later in March 1900, he served as Officiating Under Secretary of the Revenue Department. Sir Norman Edward Marjoribanks KCIE, CSI, became as a member on the Board of Revue and the Commissioner of Salt and Excise, Madras. He also acted as the Home member in the executive council of the Governor of Madras, under George Goschen, 2nd Viscount Goschen.
On 29 June 1929, Norman Marjoribanks was appointed as the Acting Governor of Madras Presidency. He was appointed as acting Governor of Madras until the arrival of Governor-designate, George Frederick Stanley from England. Marjoribanks succeeded George Joachim Goschen, 2nd Viscount Goschen GCSI GCIE CBE VD PC, who retired as the Governor of Madras on 29 June 1929. The Madras Presidency, also known as the Presidency of Fort St. George and Madras Province, was an administrative sub division of British dominated India. The territory included most of southern India, such as the modern states of Tamil Nadu, the Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions of Andhra Pradesh, Lakshadweep Islands, the Malabar region of North Kerala, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangapur and Gajapati districts of southern Orissa and the Bellary, Ganjam, Dakshina Kannada, Rayagada and Udupi districts of Karnataka. Norman Edward Marjoribanks served in office until 11 November 1929 and was succeeded by Lieutenant Colonel Sir George Frederick Stanley GCSI GCIE CMG as the Governor of Madras Presidency.
After the expiry of his term, he went back to England. Norman Marjoribanks died at the age of 67 in the year 1939 in Kent, United Kingdom.
Honours of Norman Marjoribanks
Sir Norman Edward Marjoribanks was honoured with Companion of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) in 1919 and was elevated to a Knight Commander of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE). Later in the year 1922, he was knighted with Companion of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India (CSI).
