Murga Mahadeva Shrine

Murga Mahadeva Shrine, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located in Kendujhar district in Orissa. The temple earlier served as a tribal pilgrimage centre, later converted into a Hindu pilgrimage destination.

Murga Mahadeva Shrine, OrissaMurga Mahadeva Shrine, narrating the age old sagas of Lord Shiva, is situated in Nuamundi mines area under Champua subdivision in Kendujhar district in Orissa. The temple, reminiscent of both tribal and Brahmanical modes of worship, is swarmed by pilgrims during the festive season.

The name Murga Mahadev was derived from two words Murugan and Mahadev that signifies Lord Kartikeya and Lord Shiva respectively in Dravidian languages. As per the historical records, the temple during the ancient period served as a pilgrimage centre for the tribals who worshipped their tribal gods in this region. Later the temple was converted into a Hindu pilgrimage centre.

Various religious rituals are celebrated with great enthusiasm and fervour by the temple during the month of Shraavana and Kartik such as Shivaratri, Shiva Vivaha, attracting hordes of pilgrims from different sections and destinations. The temple region also serves as a recreational spot for its scenic beauty and the resonating sound of waterfalls flowing in the vicinity.
