The Madras Railway Volunteers regiment was one of the infantry battalions which were raised by the British Empire in India. The unit was formed in 21st August 1885 under the British Colonial Auxiliary Forces in India. The volunteer corps regiment was incorporated as a part of the Madras Army which was one of the 3 major Presidency Armies in British India. The Madras Presidency Army was originally formed with the objective of defending the commercial interests of the East India Company.
The headquarters of the Madras Railway Volunteers was established at Perambore, Madras (now Chennai) in Tamil Nadu state in 1901. The troops wore khaki drill uniform and had the motto "One and All". The military unit raised several companies in Gooty in Andhra Pradesh, Podanur in Tamil Nadu, Bangalore (Bengaluru), Jalarpet in Tamil Nadu, Arkonam (Arakkonam) in Tamil Nadu, Royampur and Madras. The detachments of Madras Railway Volunteers unit were stationed in various army bases in Calicut, Salem, Raichur, Cuddapah and Renongunta.
On 4th June 1910, the Madras Railway Volunteers was amalgamated with the Southern Mahratta Railway Rifle Corps in order to raise the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Rifles. The Madras Railway Volunteers was assigned as the 1st Battalion, Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Rifles and the Southern Mahratta Railway Rifle Corps was designated as the 2nd Battalion, Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Rifles.
