The Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Rifles unit was a former regiment of the Auxiliary Force that operated under the British Indian Army. The regiment was affiliated with the Madras (now Chennai) and Southern Mahratta Railway, which was a South Indian railway company established on 1 January 1908. It was raised as the Madras Railway Volunteers and Southern Mahratta Railway Rifle Corps on 4th June 1910. The regiment was formed by the amalgamation of the Madras Railway Volunteers unit and the Southern Mahratta Railway Rifle Corps. The Madras Railway Volunteers was assigned as the 1st Battalion and the Southern Mahratta Railway Rifle Corps was designated as the 2nd Battalion.
Later on 1st October 1920, it was renamed as the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway Rifles. The formal uniform of the troops included Khaki dress with white facings. It also included a military badge with an 8-pointed star surmounted by a crown with a bugle encircled by a garter in the centre.
