This lake is called Menmecho as it receives water from the melting snow of the mountain. Characteristically, this lake is a mountain or high altitude lake with crystal clear water. It is considered to be one of the famous lakes of Sikkim. The Menmecho is believed to change colours every minute.

Geography of Lake Menmecho
Lake Menmecho is situated at an altitude of about 13000 feet. It is fed by glacial waters brought by gurgling rivers and waterfalls. More specifically, it is in the summer season that the waters of the lake are sourced by melting snow. In the rainy season, monsoon itself feeds this lake with water. This lake itself is the source of a river called Rangpo Chu. Rangpo Chu is a tributary of the Teesta River. This lake is known for its scenic beauty, which is evident in the greenery around the lake. The lake is surrounded by virgin forests with high mountain walls guarding this lake.

Fauna of Lake Memencho
Memencho Lake is a home to a renowned species of fish called trout fish. This lake is famous for supporting its population. It is considered to be one of the best trout cultivation centers of Sikkim. This lake is located close to a fishing farm for the cultivation of this marine creature. Migratory birds are also known to visit this lake. They will be evident just before the winters, in November.

Visiting Information
Memencho Lake can be reached through the state capital and is well connected with all the local transports. This lake lies on the way to the Jelepla Pass. It is located about 20 km before the Tsomgo Lake and about 60 km away from Gangtok. Gangtok has good transport availability as it is accessible through air, rail and road. Nearest airport to Menmecho Lake is the Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri. The nearest railway stations to this lake are Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri Stations. From Siliguri, the roads are motorable by jeep, car, bus or any other vehicle for a drive to Gangtok. It is important to note that to finally reach this lake one would have to trek, covering a distance of about 4 km.
