Kusum Sarovar is located in the Mathura District of Uttar Pradesh between Govardhan and Radha Kund on the holy Govardhan hill. It is a sandstone monument with historical significance, which is also the place of Jat ruler Maharaja Suraj Mal"s memorial chhatri. Narada Kund (where the Bhakti Sutra verses were written by Narada) and Sri Radha Vana Bihari temple are located near Kusum Sarovar. The name "Kusum" means flowers and "Sarovar" means lake.
History of Kusum Sarovar
Kusum Sarovar was constructed by the Jat ruler Maharaja Suraj Mal of the Bharatpur; he built the sarovar and the garden for his queen Kishori Rani. The building with the cenotaphs of the Bharatpur royal family was built by Maharaja Jawahir Singh. It was built in the honor of his father Suraj Mal in 1764. All the members of this family died during 18th century for fighting against the British.
Structure and Architecture of Kusum Sarovar
Suraj Mal Chhatri (57 square feet long) is placed on the either side of the two smaller chattris of his two wives- Maharani Hansiya and Maharani Kishori. The architecture and the carvings of the cenotaphs are in the pierced stone style and the ceiling of these is adorned with beautiful paintings of Lord Krishna and Suraj Mal"s court. The terrace upon which the tombs stand is 460 feet in length with a long shallow pavilion serving as a screen at each end. At the foot of the terrace at the front, there is a broad flight of steps with an artificial lake below.
