A main tributary of the Giglit River, the Ghizar River originates from the glaciers on the northern slopes of the Great Himalayan range in northwestern Jammu and Kashmir. It rises as a small snowmelt stream from the north and flows towards the eastern part, finally merging into the Giglit.
On its course many small streams, which rise from the Ghizar valley and join its path. Flowing along the steep slope in its upper and middle courses, the river becomes wider near the convergence with the Gilgit River. North American rainbow trout, Chinese carp and large numbers of brown trout are the striking species of fish found in the upper portions of the Ghizar River.
