Edward Maltby

Edward Maltby served as the Acting Governor of Madras Presidency from the year 1863 to 1864, in the erstwhile undivided India under the rule of the British Empire. He was also a British colonial administrator. Maltby also served as one of the members of the British Indian Civil Service, which was the civil service of the Government of India during the era of the rule of British Empire in India. The members of the civil service were appointed under Section XXXII of the Government of India Act, 1858 of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. After the year 1886, the Indian Civil Service was officially known as Imperial Civil Service.

Early Life of Edward Maltby
Edward Maltby was born on 5th January 1811 to the parents Thomas Maltby and Henrietta Crichton. His father was a British banker. Edward Maltby had seven other siblings. He received his education from the Winchester College from the year 1826 to 1829 and later completed his higher studies from the Haileybury College from 1829 to 1832. Edward Maltby passed the civil service entrance examinations in the year 1832 and was qualified to join the British Indian Civil Service.

Career of Edward Maltby
Edward Maltby served in the Madras Civil Service for a period of 32 years, from the year 1832 till 1864. He also acted as the Chief Secretary to the Government of Madras Prseidency. The Madras Presidency, also known as the Presidency of Fort St. George and Madras Province, was an administrative sub division of British dominated India. The territory included most of southern India, such as the modern states of Tamil Nadu, the Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema regions of Andhra Pradesh, Lakshadweep Islands, the Malabar region of North Kerala, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangapur and Gajapati districts of southern Orissa and the Bellary, Ganjam, Dakshina Kannada, Rayagada and Udupi districts of Karnataka.

After Sir William Thomas Denison, KCB, the then Governor of Madras Province was assigned to act as the Viceroy of India, Edward Maltby appointed to serve as the Governor of Madras on 26 November 1863. He served in office till 18 January 1864 and was succeeded by William Denison. Later in 1864 Maltby was nominated to the Madras Legislative Council and served a single term.

Personal Life of Edward Maltby
Edward Maltby was married with Jenny Pennycuick in Surrey on October 12, 1843. Hi wife was the daughter of John Pennycuick at Betchworth. The couple had 11 children, including 7 sons and 5 daughters.
