The Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut is given by Filmfare in its annual Filmfare Awards, to the debutant actor who delivers the most impressive or sensational performance in his first Hindi film released in the preceding year, thus marking a promising presence in the Hindi film industry. The award to recognise newcomer actors was introduced by Filmfare as Sensational Debut of the Year award in 1989 and was presented to Aamir Khan for his breakthrough debut in ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ in the year 1988. Later in 1996, the award was segregated into two, one for the debutant (male newcomer) actor Best Male Debut and the other for the debutante (female newcomer) actor Best Female Debut.
Veteran actors Rishi Kapoor and Anupam Kher won the premier Filmfare Award for Best Actor for their very debut films ‘Bobby’ in 1974 and ‘Saaransh’ in 1985 respectively, but not any debut award as no such award existed for newcomers during that time. Actor and superstar Hrithik Roshan remains the only newcomer actor to have also won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor along with the Best Male Debut award in the year 2001, for his storming and sensational performance in his debut film ‘Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai’ released in 2000.
