Upper Anaicut

Upper Anaicut is an important dams located in Tamil Nadu. It was built in the 19th century by Sir Arthur Cotton.

Upper Anaicut, Tamil NaduThe Upper Anaicut built on the Kaveri River is located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is also known as Mukkombu that is situated almost 18 kilometers west of Trichy. At this location Kollidam River diversifies from the Kaveri River. Upper Anaicut or Mukkombu is almost 685 meter long. It was constructed in the 19th century by Sir Arthur Cotton. He was inspired from the architectural design of the 2nd century Grand Anicut also known as Kallanai dam built by the Cholas. The site serves as an ideal picnic spot. The dam is surrounded by greenery and is located in the midst of calm and serene ambience. The place is also adorned with a beautifully decorated garden.

The Kaveri River forms a boundary between the Erode and Salem districts. The river is joined by the Bhavani River in the town of Bhavani. At the confluence of these two rivers the famous Sangameswarar Temple has been constructed. This is a famous pilgrimage centre here. The dam then divides into two channels at the Upper Anaicut that forms the island of Srirangam.
