Surya Kund

Surya Kund is a tank or reservoir located in the temple complex of Sun Temple in Gujarat.

Surya Kund, Modhera, GujaratSurya Kund is a deep stepped tank in the front of the Sun Temple located in Modhera, Gujarat. The tank was named after the Lord Surya (Sun God). In the earlier times, this 100 sq meter rectangular tank was used to store pure water. The devotees used to take a halt here for ceremonial ablutions before moving towards the temple. Not less than 108 shrines mark the steps of this tank including the shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva, Sheetala Mata and many others. In front of this tank, a huge "torana" (archway) leads to the Sabha Mandap of the Sun Temple.

Structure of Surya Kund
Surya Kund is rectangular in shape. It measures 176 feet from north to south and 120 feet from east to west. It is paved with stones all around. There are four terraces and recessed steps to descend to reach the bottom of the tank. The main entrance lies on west. There are steps to reach from one terrace to another on right angle to terrace. These steps are rectangular or square except the first step of each flight of steps which is semicircular. The step well on the west of Surya Kund has one entrance and two pavilion-towers. It is moderately ornamented.
