The middle of the second century B.C. saw North India entering into a new phase. After Pushyamitra was dead North India got divided into a number of petty states, while Pusyamitra`s descendants remained contented with a kingdom in and around Vidisha District. Bareilly and Allahabad Districts of Uttar Pradesh had under it at least two subordinate dynasties, one ruling at Ahichchatra and another at Kausambi.
The combined testimony of the Pabhosa records and the coins reveal that Panchala and Kausambi were two independent kingdoms that arose on the ashes of Pushyamitra Empire. Kausambi was the capital of Vatsa Dynasty.
