Pasupatiswarar Temple

Pasupatiswarar Temple, an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated in Pandanallur in the Thiruvidaimarudur taluk of Thanjavur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The temple finds its mention in Thevaram composed by Thirugnana Sambanthar, a saint poet of the 7th Century A.D.

Legend of Pasupatiswarar Temple
A legendary story states that once Parvati wished to play with a ball. Hence, Lord Shiva collected the four Vedas to make a ball for his divine consort. To evade any hindrance to the work, Parvati prevent the sun from setting. The consequence of this event was a natural calamity that infuriated Lord Shiva who kicked away the ball. He cursed Parvati that turned her into a cow. Lord Shiva instructed her to revere him in the particular location where the ball had rolled under a kondrai tree. As ordered, Parvati took the form of the holy cow, Kamdhenu and worshipped Shiva in a snake`s den located at Pandanallur. One day, Lord Vishnu found the cow without milk and canned it. Lord Shiva soon appeared and rescued the cow from the den. Thus, Parvati was liberated from the curse.

Construction of Pasupatiswarar Temple
Pasupatiswarar Temple, narrating the saga of Parvati and Shiva, houses a Shivalingam white in colour. It is believed that it obtained the white colour from the milk being poured on it by Kamdhenu. The sannidhi of the Swami is known as `Thirugnana Sambandar entrance.` The temple complex also has a separate shrine housing the idol of Parmalavalli, i.e. Goddess Parvati along with Adikesava Perumal.
