Nishadha is said to be the range of mountains. Nishadha is situated to the south of Meru. Nishadha is one of the central ranges, next to Meru. This mountain range run-nine east and west and extends till one hundred thousand Yojanas. Again, Nishadha is the name of the son of Atithi. He was a prince and the grandson of Kusa.

Mahabharata mentions that stretching from east to west, there are six mountains that extend from the eastern to the western ocean namely Himavat, Hemakuta, Nishadha, Nila, Sweta and Sringavat. Nila is abounded with stones of lapis lazuli and Sringavat is composed of all kinds of metals. Amongst all, the mountain Nishadha is said to be the best.

There is a huge eternal Jamvu tree on the south of Nila and the north of Nishadha. On the south of Sweta and the north of Nishadha, is the Varsha, known as Romanaka. The men born there are blessed with white complexion and handsome features and have no enemies. On the south of Nishadha there is the Varsha known as Hiranmaya. It is home to the river called Hiranwati. Here lived the great Garuda. The men born here are endued with great strength and have cheerful hearts. They are all followers of the Yakshas.
