History of Marsalganj
According to history Marshalganj dates back to the 15th century when the place was full of riches. During that time a sage, Baba Rishabhdas visited the place. He was a Brahmin of South India but was a staunch follower of Jainism. The sage excelled in the practice of Mantra - Tantra.
A small temple was situated at Marsalganj. Later under the influence and cooperation of Baba Rishabhdas a huge magnificent temple was built here in place of the old Jain temple. The sage also installed the idol of Bhagwan Rishabh Dev in the temple. The place is associated with many miracles and legends. There are also many tales of miracles related to the sage. As per one story, once during the construction of the temple the king had instructed to discontinue the work. He had done this under the influence and provocation of some of his ministers. The Jains became agitated and went to the sage for a solution. The sage upon hearing them asked to remain calm. That night the king experienced certain movements and felt as if he was being beaten up. However, no one was visible. The next morning the king related his dreams to his ministers and secretaries. Discussions were held in the court and all decided to go to Baba Rishabhdas to apologize for their conduct. The king also gave the instructions for the construction of the Jain temple. He also donated a huge amount for the work.
Baba Rishabhdas had never collected any money or accepted any donations for the construction of the temple. However, every evening he paid the wages to the workers by drawing the actual amount from his seat. After the completion of the temple the Pratishtha Mahotsava i.e. the reverence function was conducted in the temple. Many people from far off places had gathered for the function. After some time the water of the well finished and the function halted. The sage without being disturbed took some stones and dropped them in the well. He recited some mantras and soon water began flowing in the well. There was also shortage of ghee and flour but under the influence of the sage all the problems were eliminated.
Baba Rishabhdas had become famous for his miraculous powers. He had a strong command over Tantra, Knowledge and Penance. Many people had thus become his followers and regularly visited him. The idol of Bhagwan Rishabh Dev is also possessed with miraculous powers. Devotees from different places visit the temple to offer their prayers and get their wishes fulfilled. It is believed that if one prays with full devotion he gets rid of all problems and worries.
