The railway station received its name due to its closeness to the Arabian Sea. The famous Marine Drive of Mumbai is situated near the railway station. Due to this reason, the station every day caters to thousands of passengers. The station is located at a distance of 300m from the sea shore on its western flank.

The Marine Lines Railway station is well connected with trains of other branches. Nearly all the north bound fast trains halt at the station. Churchgate bound fast locals also stop in Marine Lines, but skip the station during the evening peak hours. The staircase of the north end of the station go past a cemetery. The passengers use the cemetery path as a transit road to reach the station quickly, even though it is encroachment. The south end outlet climbs up to Princess Street that leads to Kalbadevi Road.
