The Malabar Volunteer Rifles was a former infantry regiment of the Volunteer Corps that operated under the British Indian Army. The battalion was raised by the Honourable British East India Company on 14 August 1885 by the merger of the Calicut and Tellicherry Volunteer Corps. It served as a part of the erstwhile Presidency Armies in British India, which included the 3 main armed forces of the British administration, namely the Bengal Army of Bengal Presidency, the Madras Army of Madras Presidency and the Bombay Army of Bombay Presidency.
In the year 1903, all the regiments of the Presidency Armies under British East India Company were merged to develop the United British Indian Army. The administration of the armed forces was transferred to the British Empire in India. Later on 1 April 1917, the Malabar Volunteer Rifles unit was reformed as the 29th Nilgiri Malabar Battalion.
