Literary works on astronomy is one of the biggest assets of Vedic period which include the original texts, manual texts, exposition of individual topics as well as commentaries along with other secondary literary works. Largely it has been divided into Classical Texts and major works on separate topics. Among the classical Texts this includes the celebrated work of Aryabhata I which is included in the form of Aryabhatiya, which invites as many as eleven commentaries both in Sanskrit as wel;l as Malayalam ; the work of Bhaskara I which is included in three books of mahabhaskariyabhashya, laghubhaskariya bhashiya and a commentary on Aryabhatiya. Bhasakara who had been a direct follower of Aryabhata I devoted all his knowledge to reinterpret the work of Aryabhata I. Other popular classical texts which are popular in Kerala include Laghumanasa, Hora of Varahamihira and works of Sripati etc.
Literary works on Indian astronomy further includes some major work in the specific field of study. This includes the series of books published under Chandravakya which defines the number of innovations made in lunar studies. This also includes the changes observed in calculating the lunar calendar. Some of the most prominent works on lunar astronomy are Candra-suryasphuta-ganita, Candra-sphutadi-ganita, Suddha-candra-kriya-ganita, Sraddha-candradi-ganita and Suksma-canra-sphutadi-ganita which has been recheched by Paramesvera and Nilkanta soyamji in later period. This further includes the work on computing the time Eclipse and measurement of shadows, long range alamacs aswell as books related to astrology.
Literary works on Indian astronomy separately includes the work of various astronomers on Ancient Indian Mathematics which play a vital role in Indian astronomy. Along with the work of Aryabhata it includes the astronomical treatises like Yuktibhashya, Bhadradipa. It also includes some of the summaries like Ekavimsatiprasnakrama and commentaries like Kanakkusaram, one in prose and the other in verse, both with commentaries, Kanakkunul, Kanakkucodyam and Kanakkusastram, all anonymous. Along with this it further includes the work on natural astrology which is well preserved for the calculation of the most auspicious time for every auspicious activity. This includes the works of Brahmagupta and Varahamihira and the commentaries available on them. The literary work of Indian astronomy also includes a wide range of writings in Malayalam version.
Overall it can be said that the literary texts of Indian astronomy is one of the biggest resorts of India which has been accumulated from time to time. This gives an expression to the valuable texts of vedic period which form the base of Indian culture.
