Kuruvadweep is a group of islets forming 950 acres of evergreen forest. These islets are located in one of the tributaries of River Kabani. Kuruvadweep is 17 km east of Mananthavady and 40 km North West of Wayanad. It is one of the major tourist attractions in Wayanad, Kerala. Since Kuruvadweep is a reserve forest, the entrance to the island is restricted and monitored by Vana Samrakshana Samiti, a Department of Forest and Kerala Tourism Department. This is done in order to protect forest.

Surroundings of Kuruvadweep
Kuruvadweep is surrounded by streams and river that can be accessed using rafts or fibre boats run by Kerala Tourism Department. The area of Kuruva Island is filled with thick and green forest. In Kuruvadweep, there are three well known islets among the group, where one would come across a variety of vegetation, some rare orchids and wild flowers. One of these main islands contains two small fresh water lakes. The specific geographical characteristics of Kuruvadweep make this place very calm and the forests are always evergreen. These special features of the island have made this place attractive to the tourists who are nature lovers or travellers who love silent atmosphere.

Flora and Fauna of Kuruvadweep
Kuruvadweep river delta is a home to rare kinds of flora and fauna. One can find uncommon species of birds, orchids and herbs here. Its unique geographical characteristics make it a place of attraction. It has been identified as the most visited place in the district. At times of heavy rain and frequency of elephants and other animals to the island; a pass prior to the visit of spot from Department of Forest must be obtained.

These islets also have migratory birds, whose activities break the otherwise silent environs of these beautiful islets. One can see hornbill, parrots and various species of butterflies. Some of these islets have massive trees, the boughs of which at some places stoop down and caress the river water. The whole of Kuruvadweep has a unique eco-system. This island is close to the Begur Wildlife Sanctuary.

Facilities at Kuruvadweep
Boating facilities are provided by the District Tourism Promotion Council. It is also famous for its bamboo canopy which provides a glimpse into the natural treasure of the confluence of the rivulets. The area is completely covered by tall trees and for tourist this is mainly a Jungle walk below the shades of trees and side of bamboo bushes. The full track inside Jungle is prepared with rest rooms, huts and benches for the tourists. This is a flat walk without any climbing inside green forest. Walkway bridges are prepared using Bamboo for the tourist to cross small streams of water flowing during rainy seasons. The tourists would be brought to island in the fibre boat from here. This bamboo bridge makes the island very unique in nature.

Best Time to Visit Kuruvadweep
The best time to visit Kuruvadweep is from mid December to late April. Kuruvadweep is usually closed to the public from May last to early December, due to the monsoons and retreating monsoons. The torrential rainfall floods the streams and the water level rises dangerously high.
