Flowing of Kathajodi River
The river branches off at Naraj which is immediately bifurcated thereafter. Its southern branch flows into the Puri district. The mouth is closed by a bar in order to stop the flow. This river bifurcates a little lower at Gobindpur. Its right branch is known as the Devi and the left as the Biluakhai. Thereafter, it flows in the northern direction, again divides into the Alaka and Kathajodi. This has been cut off at their head by the Devi left embankment.

The river and its branches carry great volume of water in them during the time of rainy season. Therefore, at the time of high floods they overflow their banks. In order to save the locals from the ravages of flood, embankments have been erected on their banks where necessary.
