Kata Beel

Kata Beel is a large pond which is located at South-West Garo Hills of Meghalaya. It is said to be dug by one Garo King.

Kata Beel, West Garo HillsKata Beel is a large placid pond surrounded by palm trees in Garo Hills of Meghalaya. It is a great spot for fishing, angling and picnics. The scenic pond is located near Nogorpara village, about 70 kilometres away from Tura. Legend has it that the pond was dug and constructed by one Garo King nicknamed Pagla Raja or Lengtha Raja. The area of Kata Beel tank is 84 bighas in size and rectangular in shape.

Etymology of Kata Beel
Traditionally, the term Kata Beel is quite simple can be termed separately as "Kata" means cut and "Beel" means lake. Katta Beel is also known as "Chimite" in the local language.

Myths about Kata Beel
The locals of the village also believe that the tank is sacred and that there is some unnatural force guarding the tank. It is said that not a single leave from the nearby trees fall in the tank and the water remains clear all year round. The Kata Beel is surrounded by a planned plantation of palms.

The Tourism Department of Meghalaya has recently developed this place into a recreational area with boating facilities.
