Kallil Temple, 9th century Jain Temple, is located at a distance of almost 22 kms from Kalady in the Indian state of Kerala. Kalady is the birthplace of Adi Sankaracharya, a famous Indian philosopher.
Construction of Kallil Temple
Kallil Temple, spread over an area of almost 28 acres of land, is carved from a huge rock. Devotes need to ascend almost 120 steps to reach the temple. The temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga, is owned by the Kallil Pisharody family. An idol of Lord Brahma has been carved atop a rock. Besides, Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are also worshipped here. Jain deities of Lord Parshvanatha, Lord Mahavira and Padmavati Devi are also enshrined in the temple.
An annual festival is celebrated by the temple every year for eight days from `Karthika day` in Vrischikam i.e. during November-December. A grand procession is organised by carrying the idol of the goddess on a female elephant.
Kallil Temple is located at a distance of almost 2 km from Odakkali, on the Aluva Munnar Road and almost 10 kms away from Perumbavoor. Regular buses are available from nearby cities for the temple.
