Juhu Aerodrome

The Juhu Aerodrome is considered as the first civil aviation airport of India.

Juhu Aerodrome is an airport that serves the metropolitan city of India, Mumbai. The Juhu Aerodrome is considered as the first civil aviation airport of India. The airport is situated at Juhu, which is regarded as an upmarket residential suburb of northwest Bombay flanking the city`s Juhu Beach along the Arabian sea. The airport was established in 1928. Initially it was founded as the Vile Parle Flying Club. The father of civil aviation in India, J.R. D. Tata made his maiden voyage from Juhu airport to Drigh Road airstrip, Karachi, via Ahmedabad, on October 15, 1932.

Untill the establishment of the Santacruz airport, now Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport, the Juhu Airport used to serve as the sole airport for the entire city. The Juhu Airport is presently run by the Airport Authority of India. The airport has a runway measuring 08/26, 3750 ft/1143 m. The airport is still operates as a flying club. It possesses numerous executive and light aircrafts, gliders, and a heliport to ferry Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) personnel by the carrier `Pawan Hans` to offshore oilrigs at the Bombay High.
