John Geekie

John Geekie was one of the most renowned Acting Governors of Bombay Presidency in the former undivided India which was under the administrative control of the British East India Company. He held the position in the year 1742 and was also a prominent colonial administrator. Geekie was appointed as the Governor of the presidency on 15 November 1742. He succeeded Sir Stephen Law, who served in the office the Governor of Bombay from 7 April 1739 to 15 November 1742.

Bombay Presidency was amongst the former Presidencies and provinces of British India. It was amongst the 3 major British Presidencies, namely the Bengal Presidency, the Madras Presidency and the Bombay Presidency. Bombay Presidency was initially raised as a trading post for the British East India Company at Surat during the 17th century. The Presidency included the regions of Kandesh, Konkan and Desh, the modern states of Maharashtra, Gujarat and northwestern Karnataka state. Bombay Province did not include any of the Princely states of India. This was mainly for the reason that the internal administration of these former native states was the obligation of the Indian Princes of those regions. Still, Bombay Presidency supervised the defensive structure of several native states and also managed the relationship of the rulers of the princely states with the British administration.

Sir John Geekie served in office till 26 November 1742. Sir William Wake succeeded him as the Governor of Bombay Province and held the designation from 26 November 1742 to 17 November 1750.
