Indira Gandhi Zoological Park

The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is situated in the Kambalakonda Reserve Forest in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is located in the Kambalakonda Reserve Forest in Indira Gandhi Zoological ParkVisakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Named after the former Prime Minister of India, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the park was inaugurated on 19th May 1977. It is spread over an area of six hundred and twenty five acres and is located amidst the beautiful Eastern Ghats of India. It is surrounded by the Eastern Ghats on three sides and the Bay of Bengal on the fourth side.

The Park has different departments for primates, carnivores, lesser carnivores, small mammals, reptiles, ungulates and birds. It is nearly four kilometers from the Visakhaptnam railway station on N H 5 near Mathurawada.

There are nearly eighty species which numbers up to eight hundred in total. Primates include Common langur, rhesus monkey, bonnet monkey and fauna like mandrills, olive and sacred baboons. Carnivores include Panthers, tigers, lions, pumas, jaguars, wolves, jackals, hyena, ratel etc. Reptiles found here are Pythons, Tortoise, terrapins, and Monitor lizards. Herbivores found here are Elephant, Bison, Sambar, Spotted deer, and Thamin deer. Different species of birds are also found here which includes Grey/ Rosy pelicans, Pied hornbills, painted storks, peacocks, ducks, love birds, cockateels, macaws and other ground birds.
