Inchampalli Irrigation Project

Inchampalli multi-purpose irrigation project stands on River Godavari in Andhra Pradesh.

Inchampalli Irrigation Project, Andhra PradeshThe Inchampalli versatile irrigation project is a prestigious one constructed on the River Godavari in Andhra Pradesh. This project is credited for the changing of economic scenario in the Telangana in spite of opposition parties asking the Government to execute the project. However, the State Government kept aside this project for a while and took up the Polavaram project.

The Inchampalli project is located at the tri-junction of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhatisgarh and has been bogged down following the provisional environmental clearance due to submergence of forestland, if the project would be constructed at a height of 112.77 metres.

The three states agreed to work together for the project about 30 years ago, provided it would be built at a height of 112.77 metres and generate 975 MW of power and utilize 498 TMCFT of water. However, 229 villages would be submerged on 92,555 hectares of land and over a lakh people would be displaced, if the Inchampalli project would be built at that height.

The submerging areas around the Inchampalli project include Andhra Pradesh (36,875 hectares), Maharashtra (33,614 hectares) and Chhatisgarh (24,137 hectares). Even after the completion of the project, it remained used for several years.
