The Halali River is an Indian river, flowing across the state of Madhya Pradesh. The capital city of this state, Bhopal lies on the bank of this river. The Halali River is a tributary of the Betwa River. It was formerly known as "Thal River".
Etymology of Halali River
In the 18th century, force of Dost Mohammad Khan killed a rival Rajput force near Jagdishpur, which was later renamed to Islamnagar, on the bank of the river. The river was renamed to "Halali River" meaning "the river of slaughter", because it appeared red with the blood of the victims. Another name for the river is "Banganga River".
Halali Reservoir
The Halali Reservoir is a reservoir in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh. It is built on the Halali River, and lies 40Â km away from the state capital Bhopal. The Halali reservoir was commissioned in 1973. The barrage built across the Halali River irrigates about 73500 hectares of land. The major fish species found in the reservoir. Another reservoir is under construction across the Halali River.
