Bombay Presidency was an administrative subdivision or province of British India. The administration of this Presidency was looked after by several people holding varying positions. One such position was that of a Governor. Some of these governors are given below.
Raja Maharaj Singh
Raja Maharaj Singh was the first Indian Governor of Bombay. He served as the Governor from 1948 to 1952. His path of holding significant positions in the Government of India started as the Deputy Collector of United Provinces. In 1941, Singh was elected as the Chancellor of Lucknow University. He also became the Prime Minister of Kashmir for a limited period.
George William Anderson
George William Anderson was the officiating Governor of Bombay during the British rule. He served Bombay in this position from 28th of April 1841 to 9th of June 1842. In 1806, Anderson entered the Bombay Civil Service. He was responsible for drawing up the Bombay Civil Code of 1827. His professional career also involved serving as a judge in the Sadr Diwani and Sadr Faujdari Courts. From 1843 to 1846, he was the President of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society.
Sir Donald James Mackay
Sir Donald James Mackay was a Dutch-born British administrator and liberal politician. In 1885, he became the Governor of Bombay and continued to serve in this position until 1890. In 1887, Mackay was appointed a Knight Grand Commander of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire. In 1890, he was appointed a Knight Grand Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India. Post his return to Britain he served as Under-Secretary of State for India between 1894 and 1895 in Lord Rosebery Liberal administration.
William Vesey-FitzGerald
William Vesey-FitzGerald is recognized as a British politician and a colonial administrator. He is known to serve Bombay as its Governor for a time period between 1867 and 1872. He was admitted to the Privy Council and made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India and Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire.
Sir James Braithwaite Peile
During the British Raj, Sir James Braithwaite Peile has served as an administrator. He was appointed as the acting Governor of Bombay in March 1885. He is known to support increased devolution of powers to the Indian provinces and a limited increase in Indian participation in the civil service.
