Church of St. Peter

Church of St. Peter built in Panaji was constructed by the Portuguese architects in the 15th century.

The Church of St. Peter is one such church, located in the Indian state of Goa. More specifically, this church is located on the way from Panaji to Old Goa, in Bainguinim. This parish church is one of the oldest churches of Old Goa. In the 1930"s, this church was declared a national monument. Parish of St. Peter"s Church has near about 320 Catholics. The Feast of St. Peter"s Church is celebrated on 29th of June every year. Fr Visitacao Boaventura Monteiro is the Parish Priest of St. Peter"s Church.

History of Church of St. Peter
The church of St. Peter is known to be constructed in the 15th century. More specifically, this church was built around 1542 or 1543. An official document highlighted that it"s construction was dependent on the public treasury of the Portuguese architects.

Architectural Design of Church of St. Peter
The church is believed to have been raised with simple structure but now the church wears an antique look. It is small in size and on one of its altars is seen an image of St. Peter, the Prince of the Apostles, to whom the church is dedicated. There were few inscriptions on the floor which are evidently obliterated. The name of Joao Rodríguez Machado is inscribed on the entrance of the church. At the background of the main altar, there is the old wooden frame encrusted with thin marine shells.
