Chandrashila Peak is one of the most popular treks in the Garhwal Himalayas in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The word Chandrashila literally means the `Moon Mountain`. Chandrashila is located at an altitude of 3,679 meters.
Chandrashila peak is a rock face positioned above the temple of Tungnath. It is the highest of all the temples in the Himalayas in terms of location. Chandrashila summit presents the most exquisite view of the Nandadevi, Trishul, Kedar Peak and Chaukhamba peaks.
According to the legend Lord Shiva`s arms are supposed to have emerged here. The shrine of Chandrashila that is a little distance away from Tungnath Temple can be reached by a trek route which is rewarded by the panoramic view of the Himalayas on one side and the valleys of Garhwal on the other. Chandrashila Trek is one of the most popular trek trails that can be undertaken throughout the year except during the months of December and January when the region remains subjected to heavy snowfall. Rhododendron forests and alpine expanses stretch throughout the trek route from Tungnath to Chandrashila.
Chandrashila is the most accessible summit of the Uttaranchal Himalayas, which is significant in the light of the fact that most of the peaks surrounding it are difficult to ascend.
