Chamera Dam

Chamera Dam is built over the River Ravi in Himachal Pradesh.

Chamera Dam, Himachal PradeshChamera Dam is built over Ravi River near Dalhousie town in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. The dam was constructed to support the hydroelectric project in that region. Chamera Lake is the reservoir of the dam, of which the larger part comes in Salooni sub-division of Chamba. It is actually an artificial lake, which was planned and constructed because of the Hydroelectric Project in Himachal Pradesh. The maximum water level of Chamera Lake is 763 meters and minimum is 747 meters. The tourists come to this place, primarily to enjoy the beautiful crystal clear water of Chamera Lake.

Features of Chamera Dam
The dam is located at about 892 meters above the sea level; it is 226 meters in height and 295 meters in length. The dam has high water level fluctuations from April to June. The storage capacity of the dam is 110 MCN and the drainage area of the dam is 472.5 square km. The first stage of the dam, Chamera-I generates 540 MW of electricity, Chamera-II generates 300 MW of electricity and Chamera-III generates 231 MW of electricity. The third stage was constructed in the year 2012. The stage - I is a storage hydroelectric project, while stage - II and III are run of the river schemes. All the three stages of Chamera dam are owned by NHPC Limited.
