The term Bombala means "meeting of the waters" in the native language. The start of the Bombala River is in the Brown Mountain area with other rivers emptying into it. The one that meets it at Bombala is the Coolumbooka River. The river than meanders parallels to the Quidong River, here it also meets the Delegate River and they all run into the sacred Snowy River.
