Badhri Narayanan Temple

Badri Narayanan temple, an ancient Vaishnavite temple, is located in Madurai District at the entrance of Alagar Koil in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Vishnu seen seated in a meditative posture flanked by Nara Narayana. The construction technique and its architectural style bear a close resemblance to the Badrinath temple.

Besides the idol of Lord Vishnu, the temple also houses an idol of Lord Balaji in seated a posture. Another idol of Adi Shankaracharya, a famous Hindu saint of 8th century A.D., is installed alongside in the temple garbhagriha. Few other images of deities such as Goddess Lakshmi, the holy consort of Lord Vishnu, Garuda, Vishnu`s mount, Anjineya, and Lord Ganesha are enshrined within the temple complex. A huge date tree has been planted at the back of the temple, behind the idol of Lord Badri Narayana.

Badri Narayanan temple celebrates the Chittirai festival, one of the prominent festivals of Tamil Nadu, on a grand scale attracting pilgrims from different destinations. It is said that Lord Kallalagar visits the pilgrimage centre in the eve of the festival, beginning his journey from the Alagar Koil passing through the Badri Narayanan Shrine. At this time he pays a visit to Vandiyur, close to the Vaigai River, located on the eastern outskirts of Madurai. As per the local belief Lord Kallalagar during his journey realises that is late for his sister`s wedding hence, declines from further crossing the river and returns upset and disappointed to Alagar Koil. Besides, the Chittirai festival the temple performs the daily poojas and organises monthly bhajans in the temple premises.
