Astor River

A tributary of River Indus, Astor River is a popular river in the Himalayan belt. The river originates from the glacier on the north facing slopes of the Great Himalayan range near Burzil pass in the region of Ladakh of Jammu and Kashmir. After its upper course, the river flows in the direction of northwest and joins River Indus soon after it comes out from the main Himalayan gorge a little downstream of Bunji. This river is credited for the area`s fertile land and drains the region lying to the east of Nanga Parbat.

Many small snow fed streams originating from different depressions and gorges on the Great Himalayan range join the River Astor in its short course. The catchment area of River Astor is made up of U shaped valleys, eskers, glacial moraines, cirques and steep slopes. The area is devoid of any vegetative cover.
