Aila Plant

Aila is a medicinal plant that is used in Ayurveda for the purpose of curing several diseases.

Aila, Indian Medicinal PlantAila is a prickly climbing shrub or small tree. This plant is found in dry and moist deciduous forest zones throughout India to an altitude of 1200 metre in the Himalayas. The Aila plant belongs to the "Mimosaceae" or "Touch-me-not" family.

Characteristic Features of Aila Plant
Aila also known as "Twisted Acacia" is a large climbing shrub, 5-6 m tall. Leaves are bipinnate and leaflets are close enough to touch each other. The flowers are yellowish-white to white in colour. Fruits are sometimes slightly wavy, glabrescent or hairless and contain 5-7 seeds. In Karnataka, flowers come out from March to August and fruits from August to March.

Different Names of Aila
Aila is commonly known as "Twisted Acacia". It is also known as "Dentari" in Oriya, "Tella Korinda" in Telegu, "Chilar" in Marathi, "Kad Siege" in Kannada, "Pattincha" or "Kallinja" in Malayalam and "Kariyundu" in Tamil. The botanical name of this plant is "Acacia Torta".

Medicinal Uses of Aila
Aila is reportedly used in Ayurveda for treatment of menstrual disorders. Various plant parts are reportedly used to treat tubercular fistula, measles, cough and bronchitis. The bark is used for washing hair. To reduce the stomach pain leaves are cooked with onion and taken along with the food. The bark pf the plant is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic. It is also used to cure skin related diseases.
